They are the words students of all ages await to hear: “School is canceled.”

Cheers are heard everywhere and plans are quickly made as to how the day will be spent.

The options seem endless. What will this momentous day entail? These days are priceless, so this opportunity must be taken advantage of.

There are the age-long traditions of building a snowman, creating as many snow angels as possible until the perfect one is finally made, and competing in snowball fights complete with snow forts and extra ammo.

Though these activities are enjoyable, there is an ever-going list of the possibilities of things to do on a snow day.

Other options include finding the best places around town to go sledding. Locations such as Sooner Park, the Adams Lake hill, and in front of the Bartlesville First Wesleyan Church are all notorious for their sledding features.

Senior Rich Brown recalls a memorable sledding experience at Oklahoma Wesleyan University.

“We piled 15 people on lunch trays in one big pile and sled down a hill. Everyone fell forward at the bottom and my face was ground into the ground,” said Brown.

If playing outdoors is too chilly, consider the following alternatives:

• Be ambitious and attempt a “Snow Cream” recipe. Similar to ice cream, snow cream is fairly simple and can be made within just a few short minutes. (For a complete list of ingredients and directions, click links.)
Other edible treats to be made are puppy chow, baking cake mix cookies, or brownies. Try making apple cider or hot cocoa to accompany these desserts.

• Gather a group together and have a board game tournament. Fun games for large groups include Catch Phrase©, Apples to Apples©, Spoons, a newer game, Quelf©, and a countless array of card games.

• Scavenge around the residence halls to find some “wintery-themed” movies such as Snow Dogs, Cool Runnings, or Snow Day to relish in the snow day spirit.

• This is an ideal time to participate in a video game tournament. Or, in a completely different theme, think about compiling all the spa-related tools on your floor pamper each other with manicures or pedicures.

• Sit around the fire at Doc Lacy’s with friends or ask for permission to play a game of Sardines in the La Quinta Mansion.

“I’ll never forget the time the electricity was out on a snow day and we played sardines my freshman year,” said Sunshine Wharton, senior.

Whatever is chosen to do on this rare and opportune day, make sure to enjoy it to the fullest and hold on to the memories made.
