On a campus where tradition becomes legend and select students are destined to become soul mates, Doc Lacy’s campus coffee house is proud to contribute to both the tradition and happiness of Oklahoma Wesleyan University’s men and women.

In January 2010, Doc Lacy’s unveiled the “Date Table”: the newest addition to OKWU’s romantic traditions.

The Date Table’s creator, Kathy Lindquist, assistant to the President and manager of Doc Lacy’s, came upon the idea by accident. During break, Lindquist was cleaning and rearranging Doc Lacy’s with the help of some students.

“They asked me how I would like the tables arranged and I said I didn’t care. They ended up putting that one there and I said, ‘Oh, that could be the Date Table!’”

Although the Date Table does not currently have an official purpose, it may soon have one as its existence becomes more known. Lindquist believes the Date Table could be more effective than some of the current romantic traditions on campus.

For those who believe that walking around the pond three times with your boyfriend or girlfriend will result in marriage, the Date Table is a welcome idea. It could also take the place of the “blue tray in the cafeteria” tradition since the trays have been removed from use.

“Lots of people sit at it, some alone because it is close to the power outlet and some just to sit and visit,” Linquist said. “I have thought about perhaps offering specials for couples who sit at the Date Table.”

Several students have been amused by the Date Table since its unveiling, but very few consider it an appropriate date idea.

“I don’t think anyone takes it seriously,” said Ishanose Omofoma, sophomore. “I joke with my guy friends that we should sit there so we can give people something to talk about.”

Holly Maynard, senior, thinks it might be embarrassing to sit at the Date Table.

“I’ve never seen anyone sit there, but the idea is funny. I wouldn’t sit there because it would be awkward,” Maynard said.

Sarah Underwood, senior, smiled when asked about the Date Table.

“I’ve only seen a few people use it so far,” said Underwood, a Doc Lacy’s employee. However, “there was one guy who came in and asked about Doc Lacy’s business hours because he wants to bring his wife to sit at the Date Table.”

For Lindquist, the Date Table is all about humor and happiness.

“I don’t know if anyone has actually used it for an official ‘date’, but its still a fun idea to me. I’m old and like corny things,” she said.
